Buildings have been made of wood since prehistoric times because trees grow almost everywhere and make good, cheap building material. When wood is cut and used as a building material, it is called timber.

Timber can be considered a ‘renewable’ or ‘sustainable’ material because trees can be replaced. However, some timber comes from forests that are not replaced. This type of timber is not sustainable.

Timber can stand up to strong forces that try to bend it and stretch it. Because of this it is often used to make the structure or frame of the building. But it is also used to clad (or cover) buildings as many people like the natural look and texture of timber.
